Bottle Opener
A guide for learning about purchasing a great liquor cabinet and other types of bar resources
Bottle openers come in all different shapes and sizes, and they differ according to the type of bottle that they are used for. The most common type is a metal lever that is used for easing off the tops of bottles of beer, soda, or pop. Many people carry these attached to a penknife so that they can always have them to hand if they want to take a drink. Another type of bottle opener is the corkscrew, which is used to remove the corks in bottles of wine. For a wine enthusiast, this is a very important piece of equipment, and it also can be found attached to a penknife. A penknife with these features (among other things) is often referred to as a “Swiss army knife,” and many people walk around with them to make sure that they always have a bottle opener with them.
The simpler kinds of bottle opener are used mainly at home, while the wall mounted kind is often found in bars, pubs, or restaurants. But as the world becomes more and more designer and novelty conscious, the range of models on the market are more original and exciting than a simple piece of metal. Some are set into rings, while others are used as belt buckles, and as time goes on the ideas become more and more original. Sometimes, the rings are decorated with a specific design, such as a shamrock, which adds to their appeal.
Perhaps one of the strangest types of bottle opener is the flip-flop opener, where the bottle opener is on the sole of the sandal. This means that you don’t have to get up to open a bottle of beer or even use your hands, a big convenience for many of those lazy people out there.
Apart from being carried with a penknife, you may often see a bottle opener used as a key fob. This is also a convenient way of keeping it with you at all times. Another kind of bottle opener is the bottle blade, which looks almost like a razorblade, and is very popular in the bar culture in the United Kingdom. It cannot be used to open a bottle of wine, but it is easy to use and is very convenient to carry around. You can even engrave your name on it to make it more personal.
Another easy way to carry around a few types of bottle opener all at once is the “waiter’s friend” or “church key.” Rather like a Swiss army knife, it contains all of these bottle openers in the same holder. It is compact and easy to carry, and if you are planning to open several kinds of bottles, it makes perfect sense to keep these different bottle openers with you.
Among the different types of bottle opener, there is sure to be one that suits you. Find the one you enjoy the most, take a bottle of your favorite beer out of the fridge, and ppppshhhtt! Enjoy your drink!
